CHAPTER 22

Her warm body was wrapped around his when the alarm rang at seven the next morning.

“Liv, I’ve got to go.” He kissed her on the forehead and the tip of her nose, and she released him, rolling onto her back.

“Damn, that was a great night.” She turned her head to face him, gracing him with a sleepy smile. “I’ve got to open the coffee shop in an hour, so I need to get moving, too.”

“Maybe later today?”

“Sounds perfect.”

He hated to leave her like that. Naked and warm and simply perfect. But his father was awake each morning by seven thirty, ready for breakfast by eight. His day and his dad’s day would go smoother if nothing marred their morning routine.

Jake savored the feeling all the way back to the orchard. Being with Olivia had sparked an indescribable emotion in his gut—one filled with anticipation and hope—like something wonderful was about to happen. Like all the things he’d ever imagined for his future were about to be realized. For longer than he could remember, he’d dreamed of having a special someone, someone to share the ups and downs of life with. Someone to raise a family with, and someone he could grow old with.

After his relationship with Natalie had crumbled due to his inability to give her the attention she needed, he’d assumed those dreams would never happen for him. A few months back, he’d run into her again. Six years after they’d separated, Natalie was married with two little kids and a third on the way. God, she’d looked radiant. But having a family had always been what she’d wanted and what he’d set aside in order to rescue his brother.

But now, Olivia’s face was the one he saw when he imagined raising a family. He shook his head as he pulled his truck up to the back door of the farmhouse. He liked the feeling, the comfort those thoughts and mental images conjured for him. Olivia was perfect, but did he deserve to have her in his life? Could he give her the care and attention he’d failed to give Natalie? Would it end just as his previous relationship had ended—with Jake shocked and reeling from a sudden breakup he couldn’t understand? God, he hoped he could do better by Olivia. That thought left an odd hint of loneliness in his heart.

Jake entered through the back door and quickly disabled the security system. Everything was quiet and still, so Jake put on a pot of coffee and planned out the morning meal. He cracked some eggs, started browning some turkey bacon, and stirred up a batch of honey-wheat pancakes. The breakfast was coming along nicely when Jake heard the squeak of the stairs, and he tossed a glance over his shoulder to see his sister making her way down the steps.

Jake turned back to the task of flipping the bacon. “Good morning,” he said but was met with silence. After a moment, he shifted so he could look at her.
